What
We Believe About God
1.
God eternally exists as a Trinity. The tri-personhood of God is seen
by observing the following: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all distinct
in personhood (The Father and the Son’s distinct personhood seen in John
5:20, the Holy Spirit’s distinct personhood seen in John 16:7,8).
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all called God (Father - “Galatians
1:1”, Son - “John 1:1”, Holy Spirit - “Acts 5:3,4). The unity of
the Godhead is seen in Deuteronomy 6:4 and Matthew 28:19. Therefore,
we believe that all three persons of the trinity posses equally the same
one essence of Deity (they are all simultaneously and equally God) while
at the same time having distinct personality.
2.
God is the creator and sustainer of all things (Colossians 1:16,17).
3.
God has personality. God is not an impersonal force. Scripture sets
this forth describing God as having self-awareness (Exodus 3:13,14), self-determination
(Ephesians 1:11) and moral awareness of right and wrong (Romans 2:5,6).
4.
God's essence is spirit (John 4:24).
5.
God is self-existent (John 5:26). God is uncaused, and exists by
virtue of His very nature.
6.
God is immutable (Malachi 3:6). God is unchanging in His purposes,
character, and essence. “Although God is immutable, He is not immobile.
His relationship to man reflects moral changes in man” (Unpublished, class
notes, Dr. David Doherty Th.D. New Brunswick Bible Institute)
7.
God is infinite. God has no limitations. His actions are only
bound by His own nature and will. God’s infinity is also seen in
His immensity (His essence fills all space, Jeremiah 23:24), His eternity
(God transcends time, Psalm 90:2), and His absolute perfection (all of
God’s actions are infinitely perfect, Psalm 145:17).
8.
God is omnipotent (Genesis 18:14). God is all-powerful.
9.
God is sovereign (Psalm 135:6). God has ordered the universe as He
has pleased. He is all-powerful in the exercise of His plans and
authority. Neither creatures nor circumstances can thwart the purposes
of God.
10.
The providence of God is defined as "…that continuous agency of God by
which He makes all the events of the physical and moral universe fulfill
the original design for which He created it. " (Dr. A.H. Strong, Systematic
Theology, p. 419).
11.
God is omniscient (Job 37:16; Psalm 147:5). He knows not only all
that is, but as well, all that could have been (Matthew 11:21).
12.
God is holy (1 Samuel 2:2; Isaiah 6:3). Absolutely separate from
sin, imperfection, or impurity.
13.
God is righteous (Ezra 9:15). All His ways are upright, good and true.
14.
God is good (Psalm 34:8). It is observed that God is absolutely good
in the exercise of His love, mercy, grace, and judgement.
